photoreceptor inner segment

Definition

Target type: cellularcomponent

The inner segment of a vertebrate photoreceptor containing mitochondria, ribosomes and membranes where opsin molecules are assembled and passed to be part of the outer segment discs. [GOC:add, PMID:12019563]

The photoreceptor inner segment (IS) is a highly specialized compartment of the photoreceptor cell that lies between the outer segment (OS) and the cell nucleus. It is responsible for the synthesis and transport of proteins and lipids necessary for the function of the OS, as well as for the generation of ATP and other metabolic processes. The IS is characterized by a distinctive structural organization that reflects its diverse functions.

**Key Cellular Components of the Photoreceptor Inner Segment:**

**1. Mitochondria:** These organelles are abundant in the IS and are responsible for the production of ATP, the energy currency of the cell. They are often clustered around the base of the OS, where there is a high demand for energy.

**2. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER):** The ER is a network of interconnected membranes that plays a crucial role in protein synthesis, folding, and modification. The IS contains both rough ER (RER), which is studded with ribosomes, and smooth ER (SER), which is involved in lipid metabolism.

**3. Golgi Apparatus:** This organelle is responsible for the processing and packaging of proteins and lipids. It is typically located near the nucleus and receives proteins and lipids from the ER.

**4. Transport Vesicles:** Small membrane-bound vesicles shuttle proteins and lipids between different compartments of the IS, including the ER, Golgi, and OS.

**5. Microtubules and Microfilaments:** These cytoskeletal elements provide structural support to the IS and play a role in the transport of organelles and vesicles. Microtubules are long, cylindrical structures that run longitudinally along the IS, while microfilaments are thinner, thread-like structures that form a network throughout the cytoplasm.

**6. Synaptic Terminals:** The IS connects to the bipolar cells of the retina via synaptic terminals. These terminals release neurotransmitters, such as glutamate, that transmit visual signals to the brain.

**7. Nucleus:** The nucleus of the photoreceptor cell is located in the inner segment and contains the cell's genetic material (DNA). It is responsible for controlling protein synthesis and other cellular functions.

**8. Other Structures:** The IS also contains various other structures, such as lysosomes, peroxisomes, and glycogen granules, which are involved in various cellular processes.

**Overall, the photoreceptor inner segment is a complex and dynamic compartment that plays a vital role in photoreceptor function and vision.**'

digoxindigoxin : A cardenolide glycoside that is digitoxin beta-hydroxylated at C-12. A cardiac glycoside extracted from the foxglove plant, Digitalis lanata, it is used to control ventricular rate in atrial fibrillation and in the management of congestive heart failure with atrial fibrillation, but the margin between toxic and therapeutic doses is small.

Digoxin: A cardiotonic glycoside obtained mainly from Digitalis lanata; it consists of three sugars and the aglycone DIGOXIGENIN. Digoxin has positive inotropic and negative chronotropic activity. It is used to control ventricular rate in ATRIAL FIBRILLATION and in the management of congestive heart failure with atrial fibrillation. Its use in congestive heart failure and sinus rhythm is less certain. The margin between toxic and therapeutic doses is small. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p666)
