Description

Tropodifene is a synthetic, non-narcotic analgesic drug. It was initially investigated for its potential to treat pain, particularly neuropathic pain, but its development was discontinued due to toxicity concerns. Tropodifene acts as an antagonist at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, a type of glutamate receptor involved in pain signaling. Its synthesis involves a multi-step process and was patented in 1974. While it exhibited analgesic properties in preclinical studies, clinical trials revealed significant adverse effects, including hepatotoxicity, which ultimately led to the termination of its development.'
