Description

6-Iodopenicillanic acid (6-IPA) is a key intermediate in the synthesis of penicillin antibiotics. It is a derivative of penicillin V, where the 6-position hydrogen atom is replaced by an iodine atom. 6-IPA is a valuable starting material for the production of semisynthetic penicillins, which have a wider range of antibacterial activity than natural penicillins. 6-IPA is synthesized by reacting penicillin V with iodine in the presence of a base. 6-IPA is a potent inhibitor of bacterial transpeptidases, enzymes that are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis. This inhibition leads to the death of bacteria. 6-IPA is studied extensively to develop new and more effective antibiotics. It is also used as a starting material for the synthesis of other bioactive compounds.'
