Description

Also known as DPPC, is a phospholipid commonly found in the cell membranes of animals and plants. It is a saturated phospholipid, meaning that its fatty acid chains are fully hydrogenated and contain no double bonds. This gives DPPC a rigid structure and a high melting point. DPPC is often used as a model system for studying the behavior of phospholipids in biological membranes. It is also used as a component of liposomes, which are small vesicles that can encapsulate drugs and other molecules for therapeutic purposes. DPPC is commercially available and is widely used in research and industry, for example, in the study of biomembranes, development of drug delivery systems, and development of synthetic membranes. DPPC is an important component of lung surfactant, a mixture of lipids and proteins that lines the alveoli in the lungs. Lung surfactant helps to reduce surface tension in the alveoli, preventing them from collapsing during exhalation. DPPC deficiency can lead to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), a serious lung condition that is most common in premature infants.'
