Description

n-Octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTS) is an organosilicon compound that is a colorless liquid. It is a common reagent in the synthesis of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). OTS reacts with hydroxylated surfaces, such as glass, silicon, or metal oxides, to form a monolayer of tightly packed molecules. This process occurs through the hydrolysis of the methoxy groups and the subsequent formation of siloxane bonds. The long alkyl chain of OTS provides a hydrophobic, water-repellent surface. OTS SAMs have been used for a wide range of applications, including the modification of surfaces to improve their properties, such as wettability, adhesion, and biocompatibility. OTS is studied for its ability to create highly ordered and well-defined surfaces with controlled properties. These surfaces have applications in microelectronics, sensors, biotechnology, and nanotechnology. The hydrophobic nature of OTS makes it a valuable component in anti-fouling coatings, water repellents, and other materials that require water resistance. OTS is also used to create patterned surfaces, which can be used in microfluidic devices, optical devices, and other applications.'
