adenylyl-(2'-5')-adenosine
Description
Adenylyl-(2'-5')-adenosine, also known as 2-5A, is a unique nucleotide that plays a crucial role in the innate antiviral response. It is synthesized from ATP by 2-5A synthetase enzymes, which are activated by viral double-stranded RNA. 2-5A then binds to and activates RNase L, an endoribonuclease that degrades viral and cellular RNA, inhibiting viral replication. This makes 2-5A a key molecule in the antiviral defense system. It is actively studied as a potential target for novel antiviral therapies, particularly against RNA viruses like influenza, HIV, and hepatitis C. Research is also exploring its potential use in cancer therapy and immunotherapy.'
