adenylyl-(2'-5')-adenylyl-(2'-5')adenosine
Description
Adenylyl-(2'-5')-adenylyl-(2'-5')adenosine, also known as 2-5A, is a linear trimer of adenosine monophosphate linked by 2'-5' phosphodiester bonds. It is a potent antiviral molecule that is synthesized in response to viral infection. The synthesis of 2-5A is catalyzed by a family of enzymes called 2-5A synthetases, which are activated by double-stranded RNA. Once synthesized, 2-5A binds to and activates an endoribonuclease called RNase L. This enzyme degrades viral RNA, thereby inhibiting viral replication. 2-5A is a key component of the innate immune response to viral infection. It is studied extensively to understand the mechanisms of antiviral immunity and to develop new antiviral therapies. 2-5A has also been shown to have anti-tumor and immunomodulatory effects.'
