Description

Acetabutone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was once used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It has a similar structure to ibuprofen but with an additional ketone group. Acetabutone was synthesized in the 1960s and was initially marketed as a potent analgesic. However, its use declined due to its significant gastrointestinal side effects and the development of more effective and safer NSAIDs. Research on acetabutone has since focused on its potential use as a prodrug for the treatment of other inflammatory conditions, such as osteoarthritis and gout. Studies have shown that acetabutone can be converted to its active metabolite, 4-hydroxybutyric acid, in the body, which has anti-inflammatory effects. Acetabutone is still studied for its potential to treat other inflammatory conditions, but its clinical use is limited due to its safety concerns. '
