Target type: molecularfunction
Catalysis of the cleavage of C-C, C-O, C-N and other bonds by other means than by hydrolysis or oxidation, or conversely adding a group to a double bond. They differ from other enzymes in that two substrates are involved in one reaction direction, but only one in the other direction. When acting on the single substrate, a molecule is eliminated and this generates either a new double bond or a new ring. [ISBN:0198547684]
Lyases are a class of enzymes that catalyze the breaking of chemical bonds by means other than hydrolysis or oxidation. They cleave C-C, C-O, C-N, and other bonds by a mechanism that involves the formation of a transient carbanion or other unstable intermediate. Lyases are often involved in metabolic pathways, such as the breakdown of carbohydrates, the biosynthesis of amino acids, and the detoxification of harmful compounds. They are also important in the regulation of cellular processes, such as DNA replication and repair. A key feature of lyase activity is the formation of a new double bond or ring structure in one of the products. This is in contrast to hydrolases, which break bonds by adding water, and oxidoreductases, which break bonds by transferring electrons. Lyases can be classified based on the type of bond they cleave, the type of group that is removed, and the mechanism of the reaction. Examples of lyases include aldolases, decarboxylases, synthases, and dehydratases. Aldolases cleave carbon-carbon bonds in carbohydrates, decarboxylases remove carboxyl groups from molecules, synthases form new carbon-carbon bonds, and dehydratases remove water from molecules.'
