Target type: cellularcomponent
A ribosome located in the cytosol. [GOC:mtg_sensu]
The cytosolic ribosome is a large and complex molecular machine responsible for protein synthesis in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. It consists of two subunits, a large subunit (60S) and a small subunit (40S), which assemble together to form the functional ribosome. The 60S subunit contains three ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) - 5S, 5.8S, and 28S - and 49 ribosomal proteins. The 40S subunit comprises one rRNA (18S) and 33 ribosomal proteins. The 18S rRNA within the 40S subunit plays a crucial role in recognizing and binding messenger RNA (mRNA), which carries the genetic code for protein synthesis. The 28S rRNA within the 60S subunit serves as a scaffold for the assembly of the large subunit and participates in the catalytic process of peptide bond formation during translation. The 5S and 5.8S rRNAs, along with proteins, contribute to the structural integrity and function of the 60S subunit. Ribosomal proteins play essential roles in maintaining the structural integrity of the ribosome, providing binding sites for various factors involved in translation, and contributing to the catalytic activity of the ribosome. The cytosolic ribosome is a dynamic structure that undergoes significant conformational changes during the translation process, enabling it to efficiently translate mRNA into protein. '
