Description

Methylthymol blue (MTB) is a triphenylmethane dye that forms colored complexes with metal ions. It is used as a pH indicator, a colorimetric reagent for metal ions, and a chelating agent. MTB is synthesized by reacting thymol with formaldehyde and sulfuric acid. It is a blue solid that is soluble in water and ethanol. MTB forms colored complexes with a wide range of metal ions, including calcium, magnesium, copper, and zinc. The color of the complex is dependent on the metal ion and the pH of the solution. MTB is studied for its potential applications in analytical chemistry, environmental monitoring, and biomedical research. For example, MTB has been used to determine the concentration of calcium in biological samples, to monitor the levels of heavy metals in water, and to develop new diagnostic tools for diseases.'
