triglyceride metabolic process

Definition

Target type: biologicalprocess

The chemical reactions and pathways involving triglyceride, any triester of glycerol. The three fatty acid residues may all be the same or differ in any permutation. Triglycerides are important components of plant oils, animal fats and animal plasma lipoproteins. [ISBN:0198506732]

Triglyceride metabolic process is a fundamental pathway in lipid metabolism that involves the synthesis, storage, and breakdown of triglycerides. Triglycerides, the primary form of fat storage in the body, are composed of three fatty acid chains attached to a glycerol molecule. The process begins with the uptake of dietary fatty acids and glycerol from food, which are transported to the liver and other tissues. In the liver, fatty acids are activated by the enzyme acyl-CoA synthetase and then esterified to glycerol-3-phosphate to form triglycerides. This process is catalyzed by the enzyme glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase. Triglycerides are then packaged into very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs) and transported to adipose tissue for storage. When energy is required, triglycerides are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol through the process of lipolysis. This is catalyzed by the enzyme hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL). The released fatty acids are then transported to various tissues for energy production. The glycerol is converted to glucose in the liver through gluconeogenesis. This intricate process is tightly regulated by hormones such as insulin, glucagon, and epinephrine, which ensure the efficient storage and mobilization of triglycerides based on the body's energy needs.'
