5-Deaza-FMN (5-deazaflavin mononucleotide) is a structural analog of flavin mononucleotide (FMN), a key cofactor in various enzymatic reactions. It is synthesized through chemical modifications of FMN or by microbial fermentation. 5-deaza-FMN is known to inhibit the activity of several flavoenzymes by competing with FMN for binding to the enzyme's active site. This inhibitory effect is attributed to the absence of the N5 atom in the flavin ring, which disrupts the electron transfer pathways involved in the catalytic cycle. Its effects on various biological processes have been studied, including its ability to modulate the activity of NADH dehydrogenases, the enzymes responsible for the transfer of electrons from NADH to the electron transport chain. Furthermore, its use in various biotechnological applications is being explored, such as its potential to enhance the efficiency of biocatalytic reactions and to develop novel therapeutic agents. 5-deaza-FMN is a valuable research tool for studying the structure and function of flavoenzymes and for exploring its potential applications in various fields.'
