Description

Nitarsone is an arsenic-containing organic compound used as an anticoccidial drug in poultry. Its synthesis involves the reaction of 3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid with sodium hydroxide. Nitarsone acts by interfering with the metabolism of coccidia parasites, preventing their growth and development in the intestines of poultry. Its use has been associated with reduced growth rates and increased mortality in poultry, as well as potential environmental concerns related to arsenic contamination. While its use is generally considered safe for human consumption, concerns have arisen regarding the potential for arsenic accumulation in poultry products. Due to its efficacy against coccidiosis and its potential for arsenic accumulation, nitarsone has been studied extensively to understand its effects on poultry health, the environment, and human health.
