Description

Etofamide is a selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) with antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. It was initially synthesized in the 1960s and studied for its potential therapeutic use in treating depression and anxiety disorders. Research has shown that etofamide effectively inhibits MAO-A, leading to an increase in the levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine, which are implicated in mood regulation. However, etofamide's clinical development was discontinued due to concerns about its potential side effects, including hepatotoxicity and interactions with other medications. Despite its limited clinical application, etofamide continues to be studied as a pharmacological tool to understand the role of MAO-A inhibition in mood disorders and as a potential lead compound for the development of novel antidepressants with improved safety profiles.'
