virion attachment to host cell

Definition

Target type: biologicalprocess

The process by which a virion protein binds to molecules on the host cellular surface or host cell surface projection. [GOC:bf, GOC:jl, UniProtKB-KW:KW-1161, VZ:956]

Virion attachment to a host cell is the initial step in the viral infection cycle, and it is a complex process involving a series of intricate interactions between the viral capsid proteins and specific receptors on the host cell surface. The process begins with the viral particle, or virion, encountering the host cell. This encounter can occur through random collisions or through specific interactions mediated by host cell factors like chemokines or cell surface proteins. Once a virion is in close proximity to the host cell, it must bind to a specific receptor on the cell surface. These receptors can be proteins, carbohydrates, or lipids, and they are often specific to the type of cell that the virus infects. For example, the HIV virus targets CD4 receptors on T cells, while the influenza virus targets sialic acid receptors on respiratory epithelial cells. Binding to the receptor can trigger a conformational change in the virion, which exposes other viral proteins that may interact with additional host cell receptors. These interactions further strengthen the attachment and can lead to the subsequent stages of infection, such as entry and replication.'
