snoRNA binding

Definition

Target type: molecularfunction

Binding to a small nucleolar RNA. [GOC:mah]

SnoRNAs (small nucleolar RNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs that play crucial roles in the biogenesis of ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs). Their primary function is to guide modifications, such as methylation or pseudouridylation, to specific nucleotides within rRNA molecules. These modifications are essential for proper rRNA folding, stability, and function. SnoRNAs achieve this by binding to specific rRNA sequences through base pairing interactions, forming ribonucleoprotein complexes (snoRNPs). The snoRNP complex then recruits specific modifying enzymes, such as methyltransferases or pseudouridine synthases, to the targeted rRNA nucleotide. This directed modification process ensures that the rRNA molecule acquires the correct structure and function, ultimately contributing to the accuracy and efficiency of protein synthesis.'
