NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) activity

Definition

Target type: molecularfunction

Catalysis of the reaction: NADH + ubiquinone + 5 H+(in) = NAD+ + ubiquinol + 4 H+(out). [RHEA:29091]

NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) activity, also known as Complex I of the electron transport chain, is a crucial enzyme involved in cellular respiration. It catalyzes the transfer of electrons from NADH, a reduced coenzyme, to ubiquinone (coenzyme Q), a mobile electron carrier in the mitochondrial membrane. This electron transfer process is coupled to the translocation of protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane, generating a proton gradient that drives ATP synthesis. The enzyme consists of multiple subunits, including flavin mononucleotide (FMN), iron-sulfur clusters, and a quinone-binding site. NADH binds to the enzyme and donates its electrons to FMN, which then transfers them through a series of iron-sulfur clusters to ubiquinone. This process releases energy, which is used to pump protons across the membrane, ultimately contributing to the production of ATP, the cell's primary energy source. The activity of NADH dehydrogenase is essential for oxidative phosphorylation, the primary mechanism of ATP generation in aerobic organisms. It is also involved in various cellular processes, including the regulation of reactive oxygen species production and the maintenance of mitochondrial membrane potential.'
