4-aminobutyrate transaminase activity

Definition

Target type: molecularfunction

Catalysis of the reaction: 4-aminobutanoate + amino group acceptor = succinate semialdehyde + amino acid. [GOC:mah]

4-Aminobutyrate transaminase (ABT) activity catalyzes the transfer of an amino group from 4-aminobutyrate (GABA) to α-ketoglutarate, producing succinic semialdehyde and glutamate. This reaction is crucial for the breakdown of GABA, a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. ABT activity is critical for regulating GABAergic neurotransmission. It plays a role in maintaining neuronal excitability, learning, and memory. ABT activity is also involved in the synthesis of γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a neuromodulator that can influence sleep, mood, and cognition. In addition to its role in the brain, ABT activity has been implicated in various metabolic processes, such as the catabolism of amino acids and the synthesis of porphyrins.'
