Description

4-Desmethyllucanthone is a synthetic analog of the antiparasitic drug lucanthone. It is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme DNA topoisomerase II, which is essential for DNA replication and repair in many organisms. 4-Desmethyllucanthone has shown promising activity against various parasites, including Schistosoma mansoni, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leishmania donovani. Its mechanism of action involves trapping the enzyme in a DNA-cleaved complex, which leads to DNA damage and cell death. Research on 4-desmethyllucanthone focuses on its potential as a new antiparasitic drug, particularly for the treatment of neglected tropical diseases. Studies are ongoing to optimize its pharmacokinetic properties, reduce its toxicity, and explore its potential for drug resistance mitigation. '
