1,3,5-hexatriene
Description
1,3,5-Hexatriene is a conjugated hydrocarbon with alternating single and double bonds. It is a colorless liquid with a characteristic odor. It is studied extensively in organic chemistry due to its unique electronic structure and properties. It is used as a model system to understand the principles of pi-electron delocalization and the interaction of conjugated pi systems. 1,3,5-Hexatriene exhibits UV-Vis absorption that corresponds to a pi-to-pi* transition. This transition is associated with the delocalization of electrons across the conjugated system, leading to a bathochromic shift (red shift) compared to isolated double bonds. The synthesis of 1,3,5-hexatriene often involves a multi-step process from precursors like 1,3-butadiene or using Wittig reactions. While 1,3,5-hexatriene itself is not commonly used in commercial applications, its properties and structure have been influential in understanding the reactivity and properties of larger conjugated molecules and polymers. 1,3,5-Hexatriene undergoes various reactions like electrophilic addition, Diels-Alder reactions, and cycloaddition reactions.'
