The enzyme requires FAD as a cofactor, which is reduced to FADH2 during the reaction and then reoxidized by molecular oxygen. This activity is crucial for the catabolism of D-glutamate, a non-canonical amino acid, and plays a role in various biological processes, including amino acid metabolism, detoxification, and the production of reactive oxygen species.
