D-serine ammonia-lyase activity catalyzes the reversible deamination of D-serine to pyruvate and ammonia. This enzyme is a pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme and is involved in the biosynthesis of D-alanine, a component of peptidoglycans. D-serine ammonia-lyase activity is essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis and is a target for the development of new antibacterial drugs. The enzyme is also involved in the metabolism of D-serine, which is a neurotransmitter in the brain. D-serine ammonia-lyase activity has been implicated in a number of neurological disorders, including schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease.'
