alpha-beta T cell receptor complex

Definition

Target type: cellularcomponent

A T cell receptor complex in which the TCR heterodimer comprises alpha and beta chains, associated with the CD3 complex; recognizes a complex consisting of an antigen-derived peptide bound to a class I or class II MHC protein. [GOC:mah, ISBN:0781735149]

The alpha-beta T cell receptor (TCR) complex is a multimeric protein complex located on the surface of T lymphocytes that plays a crucial role in adaptive immunity. This complex recognizes and binds to specific peptide antigens presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules on antigen-presenting cells. The TCR complex comprises the TCR itself, a heterodimer composed of an alpha and a beta chain, as well as several associated signaling molecules known as CD3 proteins. The alpha and beta chains each consist of a variable (V) region responsible for antigen recognition and a constant (C) region involved in signal transduction. The V regions are highly diverse, allowing the TCR to recognize a vast array of antigens. Upon antigen binding, the TCR complex initiates a signaling cascade through the CD3 proteins, leading to T cell activation and subsequent immune responses. The TCR complex is typically localized to the plasma membrane of T cells, where it is anchored via transmembrane domains within the alpha and beta chains. This localization ensures that the TCR is readily available to interact with antigen-MHC complexes on the surface of antigen-presenting cells.'
