N1-acetylspermidine:oxygen oxidoreductase (3-acetamidopropanal-forming) activity

Definition

Target type: molecularfunction

Catalysis of the reaction: H2O + N(1)-acetylspermidine + O2 = 3-acetamidopropanal + H2O2 + putrescine. [RHEA:25812]

N1-acetylspermidine:oxygen oxidoreductase (3-acetamidopropanal-forming) activity catalyzes the oxidation of N1-acetylspermidine to 3-acetamidopropanal and 1,3-diaminopropane. This enzyme is a member of the amine oxidase family and uses molecular oxygen as an electron acceptor. The reaction proceeds through a two-step mechanism. In the first step, the enzyme oxidizes N1-acetylspermidine to an imine intermediate. In the second step, the imine intermediate is hydrolyzed to 3-acetamidopropanal and 1,3-diaminopropane. The enzyme is specific for N1-acetylspermidine and does not oxidize other polyamines such as spermidine or spermine. This enzyme is important for the degradation of N1-acetylspermidine, a polyamine that is found in various tissues. The enzyme activity is regulated by the concentration of N1-acetylspermidine and by the presence of inhibitors. The enzyme is inhibited by various compounds, including hydrazine, semicarbazide, and aminoguanidine.'
