Target type: biologicalprocess
Inflammation of prolonged duration (weeks or months) in which active inflammation, tissue destruction, and attempts at repair are proceeding simultaneously. Although it may follow acute inflammation, chronic inflammation frequently begins insidiously, as a low-grade, smoldering, often asymptomatic response. [GO_REF:0000022, GOC:jal, ISBN:0781735149]
Chronic inflammation is a complex and prolonged process that occurs when the body's immune system fails to properly resolve an initial inflammatory response. This can be triggered by various factors including infections, autoimmune disorders, chronic diseases, and environmental exposures. The process involves the activation of various immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and lymphocytes. These cells release inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines, chemokines, and reactive oxygen species, that contribute to the inflammatory cascade. Persistent inflammation can lead to tissue damage, fibrosis, and the development of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. The process is characterized by a shift in the immune response from an acute inflammatory phase, dominated by neutrophils, to a chronic inflammatory phase, characterized by an infiltration of macrophages and lymphocytes. Macrophages play a central role in chronic inflammation, both promoting and resolving inflammation. They can engulf and clear pathogens and debris, but can also contribute to tissue damage by releasing inflammatory mediators. Lymphocytes, including T cells and B cells, are also involved in chronic inflammation. T cells can promote inflammation by releasing cytokines and activating other immune cells, while B cells can contribute by producing antibodies that can contribute to tissue damage. Chronic inflammation is a complex process with diverse triggers and consequences. It is a significant contributor to the development of many chronic diseases and poses a significant challenge to human health.'
