Target type: molecularfunction
Catalysis of the reaction: NADP+ + prostaglandin E(1) = 15-dehydro-prostaglandin E1 + H+ + NADPH. [EC:1.1.1.197, RHEA:11636]
15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (NADP+) activity catalyzes the oxidation of the 15-hydroxy group of prostaglandins (PGs), specifically prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), and prostaglandin I2 (PGI2). This enzymatic reaction converts the 15-hydroxy group to a 15-keto group, resulting in the inactivation of the prostaglandin molecule. The reaction requires the cofactor nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+) as an electron acceptor. The enzyme's activity is crucial in regulating the levels of prostaglandins, which play important roles in inflammation, pain, fever, and various physiological processes. 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (NADP+) activity is also involved in the metabolism of other bioactive lipids, such as leukotrienes and thromboxanes. By inactivating these molecules, the enzyme helps to control their biological activity and prevent excessive inflammation.'
