Target type: molecularfunction
Catalysis of the reaction: a 3-oxo-5-alpha-steroid + acceptor = a 3-oxo-delta(4)-steroid + reduced acceptor. [EC:1.3.99.5]
3-oxo-5α-steroid 4-dehydrogenase activity catalyzes the oxidation of the C4 position of a 3-oxo-5α-steroid, converting the 4β-hydrogen to a ketone. This enzyme is involved in the biosynthesis of bile acids, steroids, and other steroid hormones. It is also involved in the detoxification of steroid hormones. The enzyme is highly specific for 3-oxo-5α-steroids, and it has a broad substrate specificity, accepting a variety of steroid substrates. This enzymatic activity is found in a variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals.'
