L-allo-threonine aldolase activity catalyzes the reversible aldol cleavage of L-allo-threonine to glycine and acetaldehyde. This enzyme is a member of the class I aldolases, which utilize a Schiff base mechanism for catalysis. The active site of L-allo-threonine aldolase contains a lysine residue that forms a Schiff base with the substrate, L-allo-threonine. This Schiff base intermediate is then cleaved to form glycine and an acetaldehyde-enzyme adduct. The acetaldehyde is then released from the enzyme, regenerating the active site lysine residue. L-allo-threonine aldolase is a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of L-allo-threonine, which is an important precursor for the synthesis of various amino acids and peptides. This enzyme has been found in a variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and mammals.'
