presynaptic endocytic zone membrane

Definition

Target type: cellularcomponent

The region of the presynaptic membrane that is part of the presynaptic endocytic zone - where synaptic vesicles are endocytosed and recycled following release. [GOC:dos]

The presynaptic endocytic zone membrane is a specialized region of the presynaptic plasma membrane that plays a critical role in the recycling of synaptic vesicles. This region is characterized by its high concentration of proteins involved in endocytosis, including clathrin, adaptor proteins, and dynamin. The endocytic zone membrane is also enriched in lipids, such as phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2), which is involved in the recruitment of endocytic proteins.

The endocytic zone membrane is highly dynamic and constantly undergoes cycles of endocytosis and exocytosis. During endocytosis, synaptic vesicles are internalized from the presynaptic plasma membrane and transported to the cytoplasm, where they are recycled and refilled with neurotransmitter. During exocytosis, synaptic vesicles fuse with the presynaptic plasma membrane and release their neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft.

The endocytic zone membrane is a complex and dynamic structure that is essential for the proper functioning of synapses. The proteins and lipids that make up this membrane are precisely organized and regulated to ensure efficient and accurate neurotransmitter release and recycling.'
