lateral element

Definition

Target type: cellularcomponent

A proteinaceous core found between sister chromatids during meiotic prophase. [GOC:elh]

The lateral element is a component of the stereocilia bundle found in hair cells of the inner ear. It is located at the periphery of the bundle, adjacent to the kinocilium. The lateral element consists of a complex arrangement of actin filaments, cross-linking proteins, and other structural components. These components work together to provide structural support and maintain the shape of the stereocilia bundle. The lateral element also plays a role in the mechanical transduction process, which converts sound vibrations into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain.'
