mRNA (2'-O-methyladenosine-N6-)-methyltransferase activity

Definition

Target type: molecularfunction

Catalysis of the reaction: S-adenosyl-L-methionine + m(7)G(5')pppAm = S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + m(7)G(5')pppm(6)Am. [EC:2.1.1.62]

mRNA (2'-O-methyladenosine-N6-)-methyltransferase activity catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine to the N6 position of adenosine in mRNA. This modification, known as N6-methyladenosine (m6A), is a widespread and dynamic epigenetic mark that plays crucial roles in regulating various aspects of mRNA metabolism. The enzyme specifically targets adenosine residues within a consensus sequence, usually containing a GGACU motif, within the mRNA molecule. The m6A modification can affect mRNA splicing, translation efficiency, stability, and transport. By altering these processes, m6A methylation influences gene expression and plays a role in cellular differentiation, development, and response to environmental stimuli. m6A modification is also involved in various biological processes, including immune responses, stem cell pluripotency, and cancer development. The precise molecular mechanism by which m6A methylation regulates these diverse functions is still under active investigation. However, it is believed to involve interactions with specific reader proteins that bind to m6A and mediate downstream effects on mRNA fate.'
