Serum cobalamin concentrations in dogs infected with canine parvoviral enteritis.
To compare the serum cobalamin concentrations in canine parvovirus (CPV)-infected dogs with those of healthy control dogs.. 45 dogs with CPV enteritis and 17 healthy age-matched control dogs.. Infection was confirmed by visualization of CPV-2 through fecal electron microscopy. All dogs received supportive care. Serum samples taken at admission were used to determine cobalamin, C-reactive protein, and albumin concentrations.. Serum cobalamin concentrations were significantly lower in the CPV-infected group (median [interquartile range], 173 pmol/L [< 111 to 722 pmol/L]) than in healthy control dogs (379 pmol/L [193 to > 738 pmol/L). There was no association between cobalamin concentration and C-reactive protein or albumin concentration.. While hypocobalaminemia was common in CPV-infected dogs, the clinical relevance of this finding remains to be determined. Studies assessing markers of cellular cobalamin deficiency in dogs with CPV infection appear warranted. Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anemia and Polyneuropathy Due to Chronic Radiation Enteritis.
A 62-year-old Japanese woman developed numbness of the extremities and megaloblastic anemia. She had undergone total abdominal hysterectomy, whole-pelvis radiation therapy and chemotherapy for gynecological cancer 10 years before. Chronic abdominal pain, diarrhea and intermittent small-bowel obstruction had afflicted her for a long time. We diagnosed her with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia and polyneuropathy due to chronic radiation enteritis causing malabsorption. Vitamin B12 injections improved her numbness and anemia. The early diagnosis and treatment of deficiency of vitamin B12 are important. Physicians should regularly measure vitamin B12 levels and supplement vitamin B12 as needed in patients with chronic radiation enteritis. Bacterial overgrowth associated with a naturally occurring enteropathy in the German shepherd dog.
Quantitative and qualitative bacteriological studies were performed on duodenal juice from 19 dogs with chronic small intestinal disease. Bacterial overgrowth was demonstrated in seven German shepherd dogs with minimal histological but specific biochemical abnormalities in the jejunal mucosa. Most frequently this overgrowth comprised bacteria of the normal flora, particularly Escherichia coli and enterococci, but these were occasionally accompanied by bacteria rarely present in the proximal small intestine of the normal dog, particularly Clostridium species. In most cases this overgrowth was associated with raised serum folate and reduced serum vitamin B12 concentrations, a finding consistent with the capacity of many enteric bacteria to synthesise folate and bind vitamin B12. Postinfective malabsorption: a sprue syndrome.
Thirteen cases are described of temporary malabsorption in adults presenting after an episode of apparent infective enteritis. Clinical features included diarrohea, anorexia, and weight loss. Investigations indicated diffuse impairment of function in the small bowel, including the ileum, with well-preserved mucosal morphology in the upper jejunum and a tendency to rapid folate depletion. Spontaneous recovery usually occurred within weeks but two cases ran a more prolonged and severe course. The clinical features of this syndrome are those of tropical sprue, but the outcome of the illness is probably influenced by nutritional as well as environmental factors. There may be a gradation of severity of illness from megaloblastic anaemia to florid malabsorption syndrome.
