trioxsalen and Skin Neoplasms

trioxsalen has been researched along with Skin Neoplasms in 11 studies

Trioxsalen: Pigmenting photosensitizing agent obtained from several plants, mainly Psoralea corylifolia. It is administered either topically or orally in conjunction with ultraviolet light in the treatment of vitiligo.
lactone : Any cyclic carboxylic ester containing a 1-oxacycloalkan-2-one structure, or an analogue having unsaturation or heteroatoms replacing one or more carbon atoms of the ring.
antipsoriatic : A drug used to treat psoriasis.
trioxsalen : 7H-Furo[3,2-g]chromen-7-one in which positions 2, 5, and 9 are substituted by methyl groups. Like other psoralens, trioxsalen causes photosensitization of the skin. It is administered orally in conjunction with UV-A for phototherapy treatment of vitiligo. After photoactivation it creates interstrand cross-links in DNA, inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell division, and can lead to cell injury; recovery from the cell injury may be followed by increased melanisation of the epidermis.

Skin Neoplasms: Tumors or cancer of the SKIN.

Research Excerpts

"It has been suggested that trioxsalen bath and ultraviolet (UV) A (PUVA) is associated with a very low or no risk of non-melanoma skin cancer, but the numbers of patients in individual studies have been limited."7.70Trioxsalen bath PUVA did not increase the risk of squamous cell skin carcinoma and cutaneous malignant melanoma in a joint analysis of 944 Swedish and Finnish patients with psoriasis. ( Berne, B; Hannuksela, M; Hannuksela-Svahn, A; Karvonen, J; Lindelöf, B; Poikolainen, K; Pukkala, E; Sigurgeirsson, B, 1999)
"We performed a record linkage study of 337 male and 190 female patients with psoriasis treated with trioxsalen bath PUVA during the period 1977 to 1988 and the Finnish Cancer Registry (cancer incidence in the period 1977 to 1993)."7.69Cancer incidence among Finnish patients with psoriasis treated with trioxsalen bath PUVA. ( Hannuksela, A; Hannuksela, M; Karvonen, J; Pukkala, E, 1996)
"A thorough clinical follow-up study with regard to the occurrence of degenerative skin changes and cutaneous carcinomas was undertaken in 1982 in 149 patients with moderate to severe psoriasis treated with PUVA baths (trioxsalen + UVA)."7.67Long-term safety of trioxsalen bath PUVA treatment: an 8-year follow-up of 149 psoriasis patients. ( Berne, B; Fischer, T; Michaëlsson, G; Norén, P, 1984)
"Three patients with parapsoriasis en plaques (PEP), fifteen with mycosis fungoides (MF), and one with Sézary's syndrome (SS) were given a bath to which a small amount of trioxsalen solution had been added, and then exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from a bank of dysprosium lamps."7.66Treatment of parapsoriasis en plaques, mycosis fungoides, and Sézary's syndrome with trioxsalen baths followed by ultraviolet light.
