trimethoprim and Vitamin B 12 Deficiency

trimethoprim has been researched along with Vitamin B 12 Deficiency in 7 studies

Trimethoprim: A pyrimidine inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase, it is an antibacterial related to PYRIMETHAMINE. It is potentiated by SULFONAMIDES and the TRIMETHOPRIM, SULFAMETHOXAZOLE DRUG COMBINATION is the form most often used. It is sometimes used alone as an antimalarial. TRIMETHOPRIM RESISTANCE has been reported.
trimethoprim : An aminopyrimidine antibiotic whose structure consists of pyrimidine 2,4-diamine and 1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene moieties linked by a methylene bridge.

Vitamin B 12 Deficiency: A nutritional condition produced by a deficiency of VITAMIN B 12 in the diet, characterized by megaloblastic anemia. Since vitamin B 12 is not present in plants, humans have obtained their supply from animal products, from multivitamin supplements in the form of pills, and as additives to food preparations. A wide variety of neuropsychiatric abnormalities is also seen in vitamin B 12 deficiency and appears to be due to an undefined defect involving myelin synthesis. Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"Trimethoprim seems not to be a safe form of therapy in patients with a megaloblastic process; many of the toxic reactions reported with this drug may be on the basis of an unrecognized megaloblastic form of haemopoiesis."1.25Toxicity of trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole in patients with megaloblastic haemopoiesis.
