triiodothyronine and Marasmus

triiodothyronine has been researched along with Marasmus in 34 studies

Triiodothyronine: A T3 thyroid hormone normally synthesized and secreted by the thyroid gland in much smaller quantities than thyroxine (T4). Most T3 is derived from peripheral monodeiodination of T4 at the 5' position of the outer ring of the iodothyronine nucleus. The hormone finally delivered and used by the tissues is mainly T3.
3,3',5-triiodo-L-thyronine : An iodothyronine compound having iodo substituents at the 3-, 3'- and 5-positions. Although some is produced in the thyroid, most of the 3,3',5-triiodo-L-thyronine in the body is generated by mono-deiodination of L-thyroxine in the peripheral tissues. Its metabolic activity is about 3 to 5 times that of L-thyroxine. The sodium salt is used in the treatment of hypothyroidism.

"The main purpose of this investigation was to determine whether exogenous triiodothyronine (T3) administered according to a protocol known to prevent depression in acquired immunity in weanling murine protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) would, likewise, influence the splenic natural killer (NK) cell in this disease."3.69Effects of triiodothyronine supplements on splenic natural killer cells in malnourished weanling mice. "The objectives of this investigation were to expand information regarding the types of acquired immune responses that can be stimulated by triiodothyronine (T3) supplements in wasting protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) and to determine whether T3 can exert its enhancing influence on acquired immunity in PEM against diverse genetic backgrounds."3.68Enhancement of primary systemic acquired immunity by exogenous triiodothyronine in wasted, protein-energy malnourished weanling mice. ( Woods, JW; Woodward, BD, 1991)
"The thyroid functional parameters of 102 children with protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) classified as undernourished, marasmic, kwashiorkor and marasmic-kwashiorkor were studied by measuring the serum T4, T3, T3 percentage uptake (T3%UT), free thyroxine index (FTI), and (in a few subjects) TSH."3.66Thyroid status in various degrees of protein-calorie malnutrition in children.
