tolbutamide and Cystic Fibrosis

tolbutamide has been researched along with Cystic Fibrosis in 13 studies

Tolbutamide: A sulphonylurea hypoglycemic agent with actions and uses similar to those of CHLORPROPAMIDE. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p290)
tolbutamide : An N-sulfonylurea that consists of 1-butylurea having a tosyl group attached at the 3-position.

Cystic Fibrosis: An autosomal recessive genetic disease of the EXOCRINE GLANDS. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the CYSTIC FIBROSIS TRANSMEMBRANE CONDUCTANCE REGULATOR expressed in several organs including the LUNG, the PANCREAS, the BILIARY SYSTEM, and the SWEAT GLANDS. Cystic fibrosis is characterized by epithelial secretory dysfunction associated with ductal obstruction resulting in AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION; chronic RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS; PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY; maldigestion; salt depletion; and HEAT PROSTRATION.

") tolbutamide administration on glucose and hormone levels in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients with impaired first-phase insulin secretion and oral glucose tolerance (oral glucose tolerance test [OGTT]) and compared them with CF patients with only an impaired first-phase insulin secretion and healthy control subjects."7.69Tolbutamide causes a modest increase in insulin secretion in cystic fibrosis patients with impaired glucose tolerance. ( Hinds, A; Parsons, HG; Sheehan, AG, 1995)
"We hypothesized that elevated hepatic glucose output (HGO) may occur in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) as an early sign of declining insulin secretion and that tolbutamide therapy would correct the defect."3.69Elevated hepatic glucose production in children with cystic fibrosis. ( Horswill, CA; Kien, CL; McCoy, KS; O'Dorisio, T; Zipf, WB, 1995)

"We evaluated carbohydrate tolerance in nine thin cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and in six controls, measuring responsiveness to the following insulinotropic secretagogues: oral glucose, IV glucose, and IV tolbutamide."3.67Carbohydrate tolerance in cystic fibrosis is closely linked to pancreatic exocrine function.
