thymine and Melanoma

thymine has been researched along with Melanoma in 9 studies

Melanoma: A malignant neoplasm derived from cells that are capable of forming melanin, which may occur in the skin of any part of the body, in the eye, or, rarely, in the mucous membranes of the genitalia, anus, oral cavity, or other sites. It occurs mostly in adults and may originate de novo or from a pigmented nevus or malignant lentigo. Melanomas frequently metastasize widely, and the regional lymph nodes, liver, lungs, and brain are likely to be involved. The incidence of malignant skin melanomas is rising rapidly in all parts of the world. (Stedman, 25th ed; from Rook et al., Textbook of Dermatology, 4th ed, p2445)

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"Mutations in sunlight-induced melanoma arise from cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs), DNA photoproducts that are typically created picoseconds after an ultraviolet (UV) photon is absorbed at thymine or cytosine."3.81Photochemistry. Chemiexcitation of melanin derivatives induces DNA photoproducts long after UV exposure. ( Bacchiocchi, A; Bechara, EJ; Brash, DE; Douki, T; Halaban, R; Mano, CM; Premi, S; Wakamatsu, K; Wallisch, S; Weiner, AB, 2015)
"We tested 17 malignant mucosal melanomas of the head and neck for the thymine (T)-->adenine (A) missense mutation at nucleotide 1796 in the BRAF gene using direct sequencing and a newly developed assay that uses a novel primer extension method (Mutector assay)."3.72Exon 15 BRAF mutations are uncommon in melanomas arising in nonsun-exposed sites. ( Begum, S; Cohen, Y; Esche, C; Goldenberg, D; Lavie, O; Rosenbaum, E; Sidransky, D; Westra, WH, 2004)
"Following exposure to ultraviolet irradiation (UV), two of three human fibroblast strains and one of three melanoma cell lines showed lower rates of thymine dimer excision during 24 h at 40 degrees C than at 36 degrees C."3.65Temperature-sensitive DNA repair of ultraviolet damage in human cell lines.
