Renal Failure

"Development of renal failure as defined by a Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes [KDIGO] stage 3 or higher. There are 3 stages in the KDIGO scale with stage 3 being the worst (corresponds to renal failure).~Stage 1- serum creatinine 1.5 to 1.9 times baseline OR an increase in serum creatinine ≥ 0.3 mg/dL OR urine output < 0.5ml/kg/hour for 6-12 hours. In brief, a patient can meet these criteria if their serum creatinine increases (for example, serum creatinine increases to 1.5x or higher of baseline serum creatinine, or if it crosses 4mg/dL), or if renal replacement therapy is initiated, or if urine output decreases (for example, <0.5ml/kg/hour for 6-12 hours) or if patient becomes anuric (no urine production). Change in Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) Score

Defined as the day 4 post-randomization SOFA score minus the initial SOFA score. The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) Score is a mortality prediction score that is based on the degree of dysfunction of six organ systems. The score is calculated on admission and every 24 hours until discharge using the worst parameters measured during the prior 24 hours SOFA score ranges from 0 (no organ dysfunction) to 24 (highest possible score / organ dysfunction).
