Unprecedented community containment measures were taken following the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy. The aim of the study was to explore the self-reported future compliance of citizens with such measures and its relationship with potentially impactful psychological variables.. An online survey was completed by 931 people (18-76 years) distributed across the Italian territory. In addition to demographics, five dimensions were measured: self-reported compliance with containment measures over time (today, at 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, and 180 days from now) at three hypothetical risk levels (10, 50, 90% of likelihood of contracting the COVID-19), perceived risk, generalized anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, and relevance of several psychological needs whose satisfaction is currently precluded.. The duration of containment measures plays a crucial role in tackling the spread of the disease as people will be less compliant over time. Psychological needs of citizens impacting on the compliance should be taken into account when planning an easing of the lockdown, along with interventions for protecting vulnerable groups from mental distress.. La apendicitis aguda (AA) es la urgencia quirúrgica abdominal más frecuente. No encontramos estudios específicos que evalúen el impacto de la pandemia causada por el coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) sobre la AA y su tratamiento quirúrgico. Herein, we characterised gut inflammation by measuring different markers in stool samples from patients at different stages of cirrhosis and comparing this to healthy people. These markers, when compared with equivalent markers usually measured in blood, were found to be very different in pattern and absolute levels, suggesting that there is significant gut inflammation in cirrhosis related to different immune system pathways to that seen outside of the gut. Unprecedented community containment measures were taken following the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy. The aim of the study was to explore the self-reported future compliance of citizens with such measures and its relationship with potentially impactful psychological variables.. An online survey was completed by 931 people (18-76 years) distributed across the Italian territory. In addition to demographics, five dimensions were measured: self-reported compliance with containment measures over time (today, at 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, and 180 days from now) at three hypothetical risk levels (10, 50, 90% of likelihood of contracting the COVID-19), perceived risk, generalized anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, and relevance of several psychological needs whose satisfaction is currently precluded.. The duration of containment measures plays a crucial role in tackling the spread of the disease as people will be less compliant over time. Psychological needs of citizens impacting on the compliance should be taken into account when planning an easing of the lockdown, along with interventions for protecting vulnerable groups from mental distress.. Herein, we characterised gut inflammation by measuring different markers in stool samples from patients at different stages of cirrhosis and comparing this to healthy people. These markers, when compared with equivalent markers usually measured in blood, were found to be very different in pattern and absolute levels, suggesting that there is significant gut inflammation in cirrhosis related to different immune system pathways to that seen outside of the gut. This provides new insights into gut-specific immune disturbances that predispose to complications of cirrhosis, and emphasises that a better understanding of the gut-liver axis is necessary to develop better targeted therapies.. Four groups of six specific pathogen-free (SPF) pigs were inoculated intranasally with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 2 and treated with either enrofloxacin, tetracycline or penicillin at the onset of clinical disease, or left untreated. A fifth group was left uninoculated. The inoculated control and the penicillin-treated groups developed severe disease, but the groups treated with enrofloxacin and tetracycline recovered rapidly. All the inoculated pigs, except those treated with enrofloxacin developed serum antibodies to A pleuropneumoniae. On day 28, all five groups were challenged with A pleuropneumoniae without any subsequent treatment. The previously uninoculated control group and the enrofloxacin-treated group developed severe disease, but the three seropositive groups remained unaffected.

In this work the frequency of isolation of rods the genus Haemophilus from children suffering from various clinical sharpes of respiratory tract diseases. All isolated strains were tested in respect of species, biotype, the ability of adhesion to oral and laryngeal epithelia and their susceptibility to routinely applied antibiotics. A strong correlation between the species and biotype of rods from the genus Haemophilus and clinical shape of respiratory tract diseases was found. It was observed that the Haemophilus rods show differences in the ability of adhesion to oral and laryngeal epithelia. Only 52% of the isolated strains were susceptible to bactrim and 88% to tetracycline.

Self-treatment with antibiotics was evaluated among patients at a university health service in an 18-month period. Sixty-two students ingested antibiotics, usually tetracycline (40%) or penicillin (21%), for varying intervals before seeking medical care. Respiratory symptoms were the most common reason (40%). The most frequent drug source was residual medication obtained by prescription from a private physician for a prior illness (43%). Although self-therapy was of short duration, the negative bacteriologic cultures obtained on our evaluation in all but four patients challenged precise diagnosis. The findings indicate that inappropriate use of antibiotics by patients would be curtailed by prescribing only the exact amount needed for a given illness and by emphasizing the need for completion of the course of therapy.

The excretion of tetracycline HCl in sputum was studied in 42 hospital patients suffering from various respiratory disorders who were receiving oral tetracycline therapy of 1.0 gram daily in divided doses.The tetracycline levels were estimated biologically by a cup-plate agar diffusion method using B. cereus. Two separate methods of sputum homogenization are described: enzymic liquefaction with pronase, a powerful proteolytic enzyme, and ultracentrifugation at 103,000 g for three hours which sediments the viscous mucoids leaving 80-90% as a clear, non-viscous supernatant. The two methods allowed duplicate assays on sputum samples and generally showed close agreement. The ultracentrifugation technique is favoured for normal purposes because of its simplicity and the avoidance of any biochemical interference.A close correlation was shown between the tetracycline levels in sputum samples and the average serum level for each patient. Over the serum tetracycline range 1.0-5.0 mug/ml, the mean sputum tetracycline levels after centrifugation were 23-18%, and the average level was 0.50 mug/ml.The levels found in sputum were compared with the minimum inhibitory concentration of tetracycline for strains of H. influenzae and Strep. pneumoniae. Eighty-six percent of 29 H. influenzae strains tested and all Strep. pneumoniae strains tested were sensitive to 0.5 mug/ml tetracycline. The remaining H. influenzae strains had a minimum inhibitory concentration of 1.0 mug/ml or higher, a tetracycline level in sputum which appeared to be outside the mean range at the oral dosage of 1.0 gram daily. Hence it is suggested that a small proportion of patients with lower respiratory tract infections due to H. influenzae would be unresponsive, or only partially responsive, to this usual therapeutic range of tetracycline.
