Patients with POAG have lower corneal endothelial cell density than healthy controls of the same age. This may be attributed to mechanical damage from elevated IOP and toxicity of glaucoma medications.. Mycophenolic acid was detected in all cats. The dose 10 mg/kg given q12h for 1 week was tolerated (n = 3). The efficacy of MMF as an immunosuppressant and long-term safety in cats of this dosage regimen is unknown.. T

[Pneumonia caused by resistant pneumococci].
    Presse medicale (Paris, France : 1983), 1993, May-29, Volume: 22, Issue:19

During the last few years, acquired resistance of pneumococci to the main families of normally active antibiotics has appeared. This resistance is now worldwide but unevenly distributed: in Europe, for instance, it predominates in Spain and Hungary. In France, according to the national Registry, resistance to penicillins, which was less than 5 percent in 1988, rose to 16.9 percent in 1991. More than 80 percent of resistant strains are found among 4 stereotypes (6, 9, 19, 23) and more than 50 percent belong to stereotype 23F exclusively. The incidence of penicillin-resistant has been evaluated at 8.5 percent in the year 1991-92. The most significant risk factor is a previous treatment with beta-lactam antibiotics, but some authors also blame frequent pneumonias in the previous year, nosocomial pneumonia, or hospitalization during the previous 3 months. There are no specific clinico-radiological features. The incidence of resistant strains is said to be higher in HIV seropositive subjects. Amoxicillin administered in high doses remains the reference treatment for strains with intermediate susceptibility (minimal inhibitory concentration [MIC] between 0.1 and 1.0 microgram/ml). Strains with a more than 1 microgram/ml MIC require beta-lactam antibiotics such as ceftriaxone, cefotaxime of imipenem in high doses. Pristinamycin still has good in vitro activity on resistant strains. Prevention rests on isolation of infected patients, treatment of healthy carriers and wide prescription of anti-pneumococcus vaccine.

Extragenital donovanosis in a patient with AIDS.
    Sexually transmitted infections, 1998, Volume: 74, Issue:2

A case of extragenital donovanosis in a patient with AIDS is reported from Zimbabwe. Despite the rarity of donovanosis in Zimbabwe it is important that health workers are familiar with this disease since donovanosis increases the risk of HIV transmission and appropriate treatment is often successful even in patients with severe immunodeficiency.

Isolation and chemoantibiotic resistance of Ureaplasma urealyticum in HIV-1 infected patients.
    The new microbiologica, 1998, Volume: 21, Issue:3

The presence of Ureaplasma urealyticum was evaluated on 1912 vaginal and urethral swabs from HIV-1 seronegative (HIV-) inpatients (210) and outpatients (503) suffering from acute urethritis or vaginitis; asymptomatic HIV- outpatients (201); and asymptomatic HIV-1 seropositive (HIV+) inpatients (120). The study reported an increased frequency of Ureaplasma urealyticum isolates in asymptomatic HIV+ compared to asymptomatic HIV- subjects. As expected, the frequency of Ureaplasma urealyticum isolates increased in symptomatic HIV- subjects. Strains of Ureaplasma urealyticum resistant to ciprofloxacin, tetracycline and minocycline were more frequently isolated in HIV+ (34.1%) than HIV- (3.8%) subjects; on the other hand, only 1 out of 704 (0.1%) strains isolated from outpatients was resistant to ciprofloxacin. We found no association in HIV+ patients between Ureaplasma urealyticum infection and CD4 count or HIV-1 p24 antigenemia.

Chemical pleurodesis for spontaneous pneumothorax in a patient with AIDS.
AIDS patient care and STDs, 1996, Volume: 10, Issue:2

Persistent air leak and failure of the lung to expand completely after closed thoracostomy complicate the course of spontaneous pneumothorax in patients with AIDS. In such cases, attempts to discontinue chest tube drainage may fail. The following is a case of a patient with AIDS and spontaneous pneumothorax who responded to chemical pleurodesis with tetracycline.
