sulforaphane and Hepatic Encephalopathy

sulforaphane has been researched along with Hepatic Encephalopathy in 1 studies

sulforaphane: from Cardaria draba L.
sulforaphane : An isothiocyanate having a 4-(methylsulfinyl)butyl group attached to the nitrogen.

Hepatic Encephalopathy: A syndrome characterized by central nervous system dysfunction in association with LIVER FAILURE, including portal-systemic shunts. Clinical features include lethargy and CONFUSION (frequently progressing to COMA); ASTERIXIS; NYSTAGMUS, PATHOLOGIC; brisk oculovestibular reflexes; decorticate and decerebrate posturing; MUSCLE SPASTICITY; and bilateral extensor plantar reflexes (see REFLEX, BABINSKI). ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY may demonstrate triphasic waves. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1117-20; Plum & Posner, Diagnosis of Stupor and Coma, 3rd ed, p222-5)

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
" Sulforaphane could be a new therapeutic approach to improve cognitive and motor function in hyperammonemia, hepatic encephalopathy, and other pathologies associated with neuroinflammation by promoting microglia differentiation from M1 to M2."7.83Neuroinflammation increases GABAergic tone and impairs cognitive and motor function in hyperammonemia by increasing GAT-3 membrane expression. Reversal by sulforaphane by promoting M2 polarization of microglia. ( Agusti, A; Balzano, T; Cabrera-Pastor, A; Felipo, V; Gonzalez-Usano, A; Hernandez-Rabaza, V; Llansola, M; Taoro-Gonzalez, L, 2016)
