sulfasalazine and Cholangitis, Sclerosing

sulfasalazine has been researched along with Cholangitis, Sclerosing in 10 studies

Sulfasalazine: A drug that is used in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases. Its activity is generally considered to lie in its metabolic breakdown product, 5-aminosalicylic acid (see MESALAMINE) released in the colon. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p907)
sulfasalazine : An azobenzene consisting of diphenyldiazene having a carboxy substituent at the 4-position, a hydroxy substituent at the 3-position and a 2-pyridylaminosulphonyl substituent at the 4'-position.

Cholangitis, Sclerosing: Chronic inflammatory disease of the BILIARY TRACT. It is characterized by fibrosis and hardening of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary ductal systems leading to bile duct strictures, CHOLESTASIS, and eventual BILIARY CIRRHOSIS.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
" It has recently been suggested that presence of primary sclerosing cholangitis is another independent risk factor-especially for proximal colorectal dysplasia or cancer-and that treatment with sulfasalazine might reduce the frequency of colorectal cancer in ulcerative colitis; the present study was undertaken to shed light on the validity of these theories."3.71Proximal colorectal dysplasia or cancer in ulcerative colitis. The impact of primary sclerosing cholangitis and sulfasalazine: results from a 20-year surveillance study. ( Broomé, U; Lindberg, BU; Persson, B, 2001)
"A small group of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) also suffer from primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)."1.30Differences in colonic disease activity in patients with ulcerative colitis with and without primary sclerosing cholangitis: a case control study. ( Broomé, U; Lundqvist, K, 1997)
"A 22-year-old man with a history of ulcerative colitis complained of progressive lower back pain that had persisted for more than one year and which finally confined him to bed."1.29[Severe backache in clinically inactive ulcerative colitis]. ( Coenen, C; Wedmann, B; Wegener, M, 1993)
"Most patients with concomitant ulcerative colitis and persistently abnormal liver function tests are likely to have PSC."1.28[Primary sclerosing cholangitis and inflammatory bowel disease]. ( Aadland, E; Elgjo, K; Fausa, O; Kolmannskog, F; Schrumpf, E, 1990)
