Coping with the sexuality of the disabled: a comparison of the physically disabled and the mentally retarded.
International journal of rehabilitation research. Internationale Zeitschrift fur Rehabilitationsforschung. Revue internationale de recherches de readaptation, 1987, Volume: 10, Issue:1

Taking as a starting point, papers on sexuality of disabled people and papers on attitudes and representations toward their sexuality, we have demonstrated that the coping of those people is directed by an ideology of rationalisation of sexuality. This ideology is expressed in different ways, with physically disabled and mentally retarded people. This fact makes clear the importance of the handicapped referent over the coping. Procreation is strongly supported for the physically disabled people (paraplegics). Mentally retarded people are strictly forbidden to procreate: this appears especially with the sterilisation of mentally retarded women.

Sexuality in the handicapped.
    American family physician, 1987, Volume: 36, Issue:1

Sexuality is often overlooked in rehabilitation of the handicapped. These patients need a family physician who can offer constructive help without being embarrassed or awkward. Awareness that sexuality encompasses more than physical attractiveness and penile-vaginal intercourse, use of sexual imagery and concentration on body areas that retain sensation are essential in the sexual rehabilitation of handicapped patients. Rehabilitation is more likely to succeed when the patient has a supportive sexual partner.

The mental health professional, the mentally retarded, and sex.
    Hospital & community psychiatry, 1981, Volume: 32, Issue:10

Because of the departure of the mentally retarded from cloistered institutions and their placement in community living arrangements, community mental health professionals are being called on more than ever to help the retarded and their parents deal responsibly with issues of sexuality. The mental health professional who would counsel the retarded must first develop and appreciation of the unique medical and social issues that can affect the sexual expression of the retarded. These issues include sexual maturation, reproductive ability, contraception, sterilization, abortion, and sex education. The author, through a review of the literature, discuss these issues and offers guidance to counselors struggling with the difficult decisions concerning sexual expression among the mentally retarded.

Sexual knowledge and attitudes of institutionalized and noninstitutionalized retarded adolescents.
American journal of mental deficiency, 1976, Volume: 80, Issue:4

Sixty-one noninstitutionalized and 60 institutionalized mentally retarded adolescents were psychometrically assessed on three measures: sexual knowledge, sexual attitudes, and self-concept. The two groups differed on total score on sex knowledge only, with the non institutionalized group being more knowledgeable. With regard to sexual attitudes and self-concept, the two groups did not differ in terms of total correct statements. Internal consistency demonstrated on all the measures ranged from .50 to .90. Intercorrelations of relevant variables for each group (10 for the noninstitutionalized, 13 for the institutionalized) produced several significant correlations. Results were discussed with reference to the development of a standardized instrument for assessing sex-education programs for mentally retarded persons.

Sex knowledge and attitudes of moderately retarded males.
American journal of mental deficiency, 1975, Volume: 80, Issue:2

In semistructured interview sessions, 18 moderately retarded men undergoing deinstitutional training, were questioned to determine their understanding of pictures of homosexual embrace, masturbation, dating, marriage, intercourse, pregnancy, childbirth, drunkenness, and their knowledge of anatomical terminology. The frequencies of various response categories revealed a range of comprehension, the lowest answering only 10 percent correctly, the median consisting of 28 percent correct, and only 1 subject correctly answering as many as one-half of the items. Correct conceptual responses significantly correlated with WAIS Full Scale and Verbal IQs and were also significantly related to the Adaptive Behavior Scale domains of Language, Socialization, and Responsibility. Serious errors of fact and conceptual confusion, though most prevalent in responses by the low comprehenders, were found in at least some responses by all of the men.
