In vitro laser decomposition of silicone fluid used in detachment of the retina.
Ophthalmologica. Journal international d'ophtalmologie. International journal of ophthalmology. Zeitschrift fur Augenheilkunde, 1992, Volume: 204, Issue:1

The in vitro exposure of the silicone fluid Dimethicone 1,000 to radiation from the Nd:YAG laser results in the formation of transient breakdown gases which are composed mainly of methane, ethylene and traces of ethane, as identified by head-space gas chromatography. These hydrocarbons may interfere with the intra-ocular environment in the management of retinal detachment.

Ocular findings six years after intravitreal silicone injection.
    Archives of ophthalmology (Chicago, Ill. : 1960), 1976, Volume: 94, Issue:4

A case of giant retinal tear treated by injection with dimethicone 350 (medical fluid silicone) was observed for six years before enucleation. About four months after the injection, signs of anterior segment ischemia were evident. A year after the injection, an injury resulted in displacement of dimethicone 350 into the anterior chamber. Enucleation was done because of pain.
