Evaluation of lymphocytes subpopulations and natural killer cells in peripheral blood of patients treated for dermatophyte onychomycosis.
    Mycoses, 2001, Volume: 44, Issue:11-12

Thirty-five patients with dermatophyte onychomycosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes var. granulosum, T. tonsurans and Epidermophyton floccosum were examined before treatment and 27 of these patients were examined again when they came to the control check up 3 months after completion of treatment. The immunological investigations, including evaluation of immunological competence, were performed in vivo through the determination of lymphoid cell immunophenotype by a flow cytometry technique. The quantitative composition of basic lymphocyte subpopulations and natural killer cells in the peripheral blood of 35 patients before the treatment was compared with a control group of 20 individuals. Statistically significant differences in the percentages of CD3+ T lymphocytes (P<0.05), T helper lymphocytes (CD4+) (P<0.05) and activated T lymphocytes (CD3+/HLA-DR+) (P<0.05) were obtained. In the control check-up examinations of 27 patients 3 months after completion of treatment, in comparison with the control group of 20 healthy individuals, highly statistically significant differences in percehtages of T lymphocytes (CD3+) (P<0.001) and T helper lymphocytes (CD4+) (P<0.01) were obtained. In five of these 27 patients the treatment resulted in failure. Comparing the group of 22 recovered patients with these five patients in whom the treatment result was failure, the only statistically significant difference obtained before as well as after the treatment was in B lymphocytes (CD19+) percentage (P<0.05). The results obtained confirm that impairments of the patients' cellular immunity are crucial factors influencing the course and results of treatment in dermatophyte onychomycosis.

Salicylic acid in karaya gum patch as a treatment for verruca vulgaris.
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 1989, Volume: 20, Issue:1

A clinical study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a new delivery system for administering salicylic acid for the treatment of verruca vulgaris. The study compared wart resolution among volunteers who used karaya gum patches. The cure rate was 69% for warts treated with patches containing salicylic acid, which was significantly higher (p less than 0.01) than for warts treated with control patches (35%).

5-Fluorouracil in the treatment of common warts of the hands. A double-blind study.
The British journal of dermatology, 1975, Volume: 92, Issue:1

A double-blind study was carried out to compare the action of 5-fluorouracil and 10% salicylic acid varnish with that of a 10% salicylic acid varnish on common warts. Fifty per cent of the lesions disappeared with the combined preparation and only 4% with the varnish containing salicylic acid alone. The presence of warts on the hands of 45.8% of the female workers of a fowl slaughterhouse is described.

Salicylic acid ointment peeling of the hands and forearms. Effective nonsurgical removal of pigmented lesions and actinic damage.
The Journal of dermatologic surgery and oncology, 1992, Volume: 18, Issue:6

A methyl salicylate-buffered, croton oil-containing 50% salicylic acid ointment peel, following pretreatment with topical tretinoin and localized 20% trichloroacetic acid, is extremely effective for removal of lentigines, pigmented keratoses, and actinically damaged skin from the dorsum of the hands and forearms. The ease of application, uniform results, decreased risk of scarring, and one-time application of this peel, in comparison with other methods used for treatment of these aging-skin changes, warrants consideration by the dermatologic surgeon.

Pyogenic granuloma following treatment of verruca vulgaris with cryotherapy and Duoplant.
    Cutis, 1991, Volume: 47, Issue:3

We report an unusual case of pyogenic granuloma that appeared after the application of liquid nitrogen and 27 percent salicylic acid (Duoplant, Stiefel Inc.) to a verruca vulgaris. Only two cases of pyogenic granuloma following cryotherapy appear in the literature and pyogenic granuloma as a complication of salicylic acid application has not been documented.

[Water content of the skin following salicylic acid and urea treatment].
Der Hautarzt; Zeitschrift fur Dermatologie, Venerologie, und verwandte Gebiete, 1989, Volume: 40 Suppl 9

Water content of the epidermis was measured before and after a 3-h , 4-day, and 10-day treatment using 10% salicylic acid or 10% carbamide ointment. The measurement was performed using the Corneometer CM 420 from the firm "Schwarzhaupt Medizintechnik GmbH". Salicylic acid ointment was applied on one and carbamide ointment on the other back of the hand. Neither salicylic acid nor carbamide seem to influence significantly the water content of the healthy epidermis. In two patients with more severe hyperkeratosis carbamide increased the water content more than salicylic acid did.
