propranolol and Tension-Type Headache

propranolol has been researched along with Tension-Type Headache in 5 studies

Propranolol: A widely used non-cardioselective beta-adrenergic antagonist. Propranolol has been used for MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION; ARRHYTHMIA; ANGINA PECTORIS; HYPERTENSION; HYPERTHYROIDISM; MIGRAINE; PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA; and ANXIETY but adverse effects instigate replacement by newer drugs.
propranolol : A propanolamine that is propan-2-ol substituted by a propan-2-ylamino group at position 1 and a naphthalen-1-yloxy group at position 3.

Tension-Type Headache: A common primary headache disorder, characterized by a dull, non-pulsatile, diffuse, band-like (or vice-like) PAIN of mild to moderate intensity in the HEAD; SCALP; or NECK. The subtypes are classified by frequency and severity of symptoms. There is no clear cause even though it has been associated with MUSCLE CONTRACTION and stress. Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
" For the acute treatment of migraine attacks or tension-type headache, ibuprofen (10 mg per kg body weight) or acetaminophen (15 mg per kg body weight) are recommended with highest evidence, intranasal sumatriptan (10 to 20 mg) can be given as second choice."4.81[Treatment of idiopathic headache in childhood - recommendations of the German Migraine and Headache Society (DMKG)]. ( Evers, S; Gerber, WD; Naumann, E; Pothmann, R; Uberall, M, 2002)
"Children aged 16 years or less with first diagnosed of either migraine or tension-type headache were reassured the cause of headache and treated by avoiding triggering factors, taking intermittent analgesics or a daily preventive medication such as propanolol 10 mg two times a day or amitriptyline 10 mg at night for patients who were suffered from the frequent headache attacks whether had to stop activity or go to sleep."3.74Short-term outcomes of tension type and migraine headache in children. ( Ruangsuwan, S; Sri-udomkajorn, S, 2008)
"Propranolol was comparable to other medications known to be effective including flunarizine, topiramate and valproate."2.61Beta-blockers for the prevention of headache in adults, a systematic review and meta-analysis. ( Hayashino, Y; Jackson, JL; Jackson, W; Kuriyama, A; Kuwatsuka, Y; Nickoloff, S; Storch, D; Zhang, ZJ, 2019)
"The treatment of headache is usually successful and thus highly rewarding for physicians of all medical specialties."2.58Hints on Diagnosing and Treating Headache. ( May, A, 2018)
