propofol and Deglutition Disorders

propofol has been researched along with Deglutition Disorders in 6 studies

Propofol: An intravenous anesthetic agent which has the advantage of a very rapid onset after infusion or bolus injection plus a very short recovery period of a couple of minutes. (From Smith and Reynard, Textbook of Pharmacology, 1992, 1st ed, p206). Propofol has been used as ANTICONVULSANTS and ANTIEMETICS.
propofol : A phenol resulting from the formal substitution of the hydrogen at the 2 position of 1,3-diisopropylbenzene by a hydroxy group.

Deglutition Disorders: Difficulty in SWALLOWING which may result from neuromuscular disorder or mechanical obstruction. Dysphagia is classified into two distinct types: oropharyngeal dysphagia due to malfunction of the PHARYNX and UPPER ESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER; and esophageal dysphagia due to malfunction of the ESOPHAGUS.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"In 80 patients scheduled to undergo elective gastrointestinal endoscopy under target-controlled infusion (TCI) propofol sedation, swallowing was evaluated by glottis videoendoscopy, using the Dysphagia Severity Score (DSS) and the Penetration and Aspiration Scale (PAS)."5.22Swallowing Impairment During Propofol Target-Controlled Infusion. ( Agostoni, M; Beretta, L; Bussi, M; Gemma, M; Oriani, A; Palonta, F; Pasin, L; Ramella, B, 2016)
"In a randomized controlled crossover study, general anesthesia with propofol or sevoflurane was titrated using an up-down method to identify the threshold for suppression of the motor response to electrical stimulation of the forearm."5.19Anesthesia and increased hypercarbic drive impair the coordination between breathing and swallowing. ( D'Angelo, OM; Diaz-Gil, D; Eikermann, M; Gianatasio, C; Meyer, MJ; Mueller, N; Nunn, D; Pierce, E; Rosow, C; Simons, JC, 2014)
"The number-needed-to-treat to prevent sore throat and dysphagia was 10 and 8, respectively (95% confidence intervals, 5-43)."2.73Propofol causes less postoperative pharyngeal morbidity than thiopental after the use of a laryngeal mask airway. ( Chia, YY; Lee, SW; Liu, K, 2008)
