probenecid and B. burgdorferi Infection

probenecid has been researched along with B. burgdorferi Infection in 7 studies

Probenecid: The prototypical uricosuric agent. It inhibits the renal excretion of organic anions and reduces tubular reabsorption of urate. Probenecid has also been used to treat patients with renal impairment, and, because it reduces the renal tubular excretion of other drugs, has been used as an adjunct to antibacterial therapy.
probenecid : A sulfonamide in which the nitrogen of 4-sulfamoylbenzoic acid is substituted with two propyl groups.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"To compare the safety and efficacy of azithromycin, amoxicillin/probenecid, and doxycycline for the treatment of early Lyme disease, to identify risk factors for treatment failure, and to describe the serologic response in treated patients."5.07Treatment of early Lyme disease. ( Johnson, RC; Luger, SW; Massarotti, EM; Messner, RP; Rahn, DW; Steere, AC; Wong, JB, 1992)
" burgdorferi to survive in the former erythema migrans sites of our antibiotic-treated patients, as well as their favorable clinical response, supports the use of doxycycline or combined amoxicillin and probenecid in the treatment of early Lyme disease but does not preclude the survival of the organism in other tissues."3.68Failure of Borrelia burgdorferi to survive in the skin of patients with antibiotic-treated Lyme disease. ( Berger, BW; Coleman, L; Johnson, RC; Kodner, C, 1992)
"Two treatment regimens for disseminated Lyme borreliosis (mainly neurologic and musculoskeletal manifestations) were compared in a randomized trial."2.69Comparison of oral cefixime and intravenous ceftriaxone followed by oral amoxicillin in disseminated Lyme borreliosis. ( Nikoskelainen, J; Oksi, J; Viljanen, MK, 1998)
"72 adults with erythema migrans (early Lyme borreliosis) were enrolled in a randomised prospective trial comparing amoxycillin 500 mg plus probenecid 500 mg three times a day with doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for 21 days."2.67Amoxycillin plus probenecid versus doxycycline for treatment of erythema migrans borreliosis.
