Trigeminal lesions and maternal behavior in Norway rats: III. Experience with pups facilitates recovery.
    Developmental psychobiology, 1997, Volume: 30, Issue:2

In lactating rats, upper snout desensitization by trigeminal denervation severely impairs maternal behavior, with substantial recovery 12-24 hr later. The potential effects of interaction with pups on this recovery was investigated. Dams were subjected to bilateral infraorbital denervation or sham surgery on Day 5 postpartum and observed for 30 min with 6 foster pups 24 hr later, after separation from pups for 4 or 24 hr. Long separation reduced likelihood of retrieval and nursing behavior, infraorbital denervation reduced duration of pup licking, and these deprivations combined greatly increased latencies of pup sniffing and durations of facial self-grooming. Both conditions, and especially their combination, prolonged retrieval duration, the retrieval sequence being interrupted by other pup contact, such as licking. Thus, interaction with pups and adequate trigeminal stimulation maintain normal maternal behavior. These findings are possibly relevant to the normal decline of maternal responsiveness during late lactation and to other lesion-induced deficits.

Multifocal candidiasis in a capuchin monkey (Cebus apella).
Journal of medical primatology, 1977, Volume: 6, Issue:3

Candidiasis involving nasal, pharyngeal, and intestinal mucosal surfaces and a pharyngeal lymph node was demonstrated microscopically in a young adult female capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) experimentally infected with Schistosoma haematobium (Iran strain). Persistent nasal exudation and weight loss characterized the clinical disease preceding the animal's death.

Resolution of pathological identification between mother and son following rhinoplasty.
JPMA. The Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association, 1976, Volume: 26, Issue:10

The case here described shows that severe psychological disturbance can be caused by identification between mother and son, resulting in preoccupation with a part of the body, which in the opinion of those outside the relationship, shows no gross abnormality. Similar delusional beliefs to those held by the mother were induced in the son, when he reached the age at which these beliefs occurred in the mother, in whom they were incompletely resolved. Plastic surgery, in the absence of gross deformity, brought relief of the distress caused by this type of psychopathology. Relief occurred in the conflicts of both mother and son, even though operation was on the latter, only.

Transnasal hypophysectomy.
    South African medical journal = Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif vir geneeskunde, 1976, May-29, Volume: 50, Issue:23

A transnasal trans-sphenoidal surgical approach to the pituitary gland is described. The operative and post-operative experiences with the use of this technique on 21 patients with hormone-dependent malignant disease are reported. In 2 patients the procedure was abandoned because of intrasellar haemorrhage and in 1 an empty sella was found. Fifteen patients developed diabetes insipidus and 1 patient died in the postoperative period.

Cancer of the nasal cavity.
    Cancer, 1976, Volume: 37, Issue:3

The experience with 40 consecutive cases of cancer of the nasal cavity seen over a period of 15 years is presented. Males outnumbered females in a ratio or 5 to 3. Age ranged from 35 to 88 years, and the median age was 67 years. Epidermoid carcinoma accounted for 78% of the cases. Smoking from early age was a noticeable habit among these patients. The median length of smoking history was 51 years. Most lesions were diagnosed in an advanced stage of the disease, 58% of the cases being T3 lesions. Regional lymph nodes metastases were infrequent; only 12% of the patients presented nodes on admission; another 5% developed metastatic nodes during the follow-up period. An overall 5-year survival of 56% was obtained. The survival of cases with T1N0 lesions was 91%. Radiation therapy was the treatment of choice employed in 85% of the cases. A 5-year survival of 50% was obtained in these patients. Irradiation offers an additional means of salvaging recurrences after surgery. The special characteristics of tumors of the nasal cavity merit the evaluation of such lesions separately from tumors of the paranasal sinuses.
